Still easing in ...

Back at the gym this morning. Weighed in at 310.0 ... Gulp. Dropped down to lighter weights so I could "live to lift another day" (a.k.a. lift more than once this week).

Gotta Start Somewhere

Well, I weighed in at 309.9 today.

And I started Day 1 of the Couch to 5K plan:

5 min. walk (3.5 MPH)

1 min. jog (5.0 MPH)
1.5 min. walk (3.5 MPH)
Repeat eight times

20 min. walk (3.5 MPH)

I'm also trying to get back in the swing of things with Weight Watchers so I'll check back tomorrow with an update on my lift. I have to remind myself  to take it easy so I can go more than once per week! LOL!

Summer Goals and Plans

With Memorial Day weekend upon us, it's that three-month time of year again where I can finally kick back and take it easy. Here are a few goals and plans I have for the upcoming summer.

Goals
1. Blog EVERY DAY: I don't care what the subject, I really want to make a sustained effort to keep a consistent performance on DeVine Innovation (note the name change. I think it's clever). I want to eventually work on longer projects (other than Tweets and blogs) because I enjoy that medium and have not done enough with it.
2. Read EVERY DAY: Much like No. 1, I know I have to read a lot more during my down time to stay sharp.
3. Work out five times a week: I admit it's been a rough start for my summer fitness revolution (see previous blog post), but I can't give up on it.
4. Work on golf swing: I want to go to the driving range a few times and at least feel comfortable with a golf club in my hand.
5. RELAX!
Plans
The great part of the summer is the flexible schedule. I don't have to travel or have any other obligations outside of normal business hours so that freedom is the best part, but I do have some plans sprinkled in to look forward to.

Wu-Tang at the Twilight Concert series in SLC on July 31st!
Vacation back in Wisconsin in early July
Along with a Cub game ...
Beck at the Twilight Concert series in SLC on Aug. 14
Offspring concert on Aug. 26
Well, that's all I got for now. Happy Memorial Day!

3 B's to Combating the Wintertime Blues

It's the last of January so I'll just come right out and say it. I hate winter. With a passion. Growing up in Wisconsin conditioned me to just stay indoors and that instinct has stuck with me in Utah, drawing some ski bums to ask me, "Why don't you like skiing?" And I reply ...

Seriously, believe when I say I've had my share of cold weather in my lifetime so any leisure time I have is not going to be spent bundled up in a North Face jacket on a ski hill.

Anyway, here's my personal, non-skier guide to the 3 B's of combating, and distracting yourself, from the winter doldrums.

Beer: Doesn't every solution begin with beer? My personal choice would be Samuel Adams Winter Lager to keep you warm.

Basketball: The conference races and battles from the NCAA Tournament bubble really start to take shape in February so buzzer-beaters and intense games across the nation will become a nightly occurrence in college basketball. And it couldn't be better timing. With the Super Bowl on Sunday (GO BRONCOS!) depriving us from football until spring drills start for the college guys and NFL mini-camps in March, we're not left with much else except Blackhawks hockey until baseball gears up. And of course, March basketball is the best basketball there is.

Baseball: Speaking of baseball, the opening of spring training is the ultimate sign of springtime.

The first set of pitchers and catchers to report is the Arizona D-Backs' pitchers and catchers report to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on Feb. 6!). My beloved Cubbies roll into Mesa the following week and hold their first full workout on Feb. 19. I'm really excited to see who wins this year's bunting tournament. (Not really, but that seems to be the biggest news because they can't make any other moves, but that topic deserves its own post).

But in the meantime, here are some alternatives to get your baseball fix:

- Replays on MLB.tv
- Rewatch Ken Burns Baseball documentary
- Baseball movies (Major League I and II, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, just to name a few ...)

Stick with the three B's and it will be summer in no time.
